Waves | Forgiveness

watercolour painting of waves.

Forgiveness. One of those principles that doesn’t make sense until you choose it. One of the hardest thing to talk about, one of the most counter- intuitive principles ever.

But forgiveness is the only way forward. Because without forgiveness, we lock ourself up. We block grace, and if we refuse to let go, slowly we go further and further from the waves of grace and love that God wants to give us. The same grace and love that will help us forgive if we will let Him in.

I love the sea. One of my favourite activities involve lying by the shore, gazing upwards, or at the crashing waves. Waves make me think about the love and mercy shown by God my Maker who demonstrated love and forgiveness to the utmost extend.

Again and again I’ve failed, yet He has gently picked me up. Each time I rebelled, hurting the very one who made me, choosing to have things my own way, yet He still pursues me, calling me to return to Him, that I may receive forgiveness.

So, each time I need grace to forgive, I remember what God did. I look at the cross of His Son Jesus, who took the penalty of sin so that forgiveness can be possible. And as I do that I allow the truth of His love to sink in. I remember that God Himself so love the world and so love me, that He would take the penalty for my rebellion even before I say sorry. And when I think of that, I make a choice towards giving grace, because who am I to hold on to a person who has wronged me in bitterness, when God didn’t do that to me.

And sometimes, when forgiveness gets real hard, I just say, Lord, I chose to forgive, help me to forgive. And surprisingly the floods of His grace, His tears and His healing comes flooding in, and I know that He sees all that I have suffered and my willingness to forgive. One day He will right every wrong, and just as He made me right with Him when I was wrong, through His sacrifice on the cross; by forgiving another, I can show forth there is a God who forgives.
