5 Meaningful and Creative Ways to Occupy your Time during the Holiday Season!

The sunny holiday’s are here, and if you’re like me (20 years ago), holidays spell fun.

I used to love holidays as a youth because it meant that I could go through all the ‘Famous Five’ and ‘Anne of Green Gables’ story books that I could cram in (about one a day) and do all my craft projects. Holidays were important times where I learned stuff apart from the usual algebra and grammar, that played a role in my formation as a well rounded person.

This holiday, rather than spending 90% of your time in front of videos and games, why not invest in a project that may very well become a building block for your life? Or a useful side hustle?

So here are 10 Meaningful and Creative Ways to occupy your time this holiday season.

No. 1: Start a Scrapbook!

If your artsy like me, and have a lot of creative ideas in your head, a scrapbook is a perfect way to spend the holidays.

All you need is a notebook, some pens, glue colour paper, old photos and stickers. Think of a memory you will like to commemorate, eg – childhood, a pet, your birthday, a meaningful trip or an experience. And spend the day getting your creative juices to work.

No. 2: Create a photobook!

If getting the different components of a scrapbook stresses you out, or if you are a little more tech inclined, why not generate a photobook instead? Collate some pictures of a trip or of your family/friendship group and go on to photobook. It helps you capture unforgettable moments and preserve their life journeys in perfect photo print.

Integrated with Photobook Designer, an easy and intuitive bookmaking software, Photobook allows one to conveniently design their own book. You just need to pick and choose the photobook theme and slot in the photos to get a lovely collection of photos in a book form.

Add in some captions and print them out into the perfect gift!

No. 3 : Learn Watercolour!

Ok so I extremely biased. But art really is a great way to release stress, build your patience (especially watercolour) and grow your observation skills.

Also the pictures you draw make great gifts for friends and relatives with not much added cost! Frame it up and you save RM30 compared to buying a gift at an arts and craft shop.

No. 5 : Go on photo walks at a nearby park.

Love nature? Love photography? Why not freshen yourself up by going on a photo walk at a park nearby?

Grab your phone, or expensive camera if you have one, set aside some time in the evening, pray that the weather remains beautiful and then head out for a photo walk at a park. Follow different themes on different days or just go with the flow and take pictures of anything that fascinate you.

What do you gain? A healthier body, a keen-er eye and some good photos that will work great as a reference for your next art project!

No. 4 : Get Writing and Start a Blog!

Are you someone who has an opinion about everything? Or do you like something specific such as skateboarding and parkour? Do you have a fairly good command of a language? (a credit in any language will do, really)

Why not start a blog?

In this day and age, there is a surge for information and it takes time to find good sources of information on the internet. Why not be a positive contributor to society by documenting something true, real and fun. Feed the AI search engine some goodness. Add some photos to it and you have an online memory book that one day you’d be proud of.

You can create your blog at blogger, wordpress or wix. Create a free account, choose your template and start a blog where you can share stories and insights from your point of view. You’ll need to be 13 years and above for this and remember to always stay safe on the web. (Don’t give out your personal details and don’t get scammed!)

What will you choose? Did you try out any of these options? Comment below! Or if you have another idea, do share it with me!
