Little Things// Ladybug on Flower

Life is often about the little things.

The silly shaped clouds, the flappy dog outside your house and sometimes (if you try hard enough) –  the pile of dishes that you are washing.

And the little things often speak more of life than the occasional grand moments that we pursue so hard after.

I think the pursuit of the big things has its place…. but these days…

I’ve been learning to savour every moment of life. Even and especially the little things.

In our thrill seeking generation, we often go from one thrill to the next. One holiday to the next. We flip through netflix as fast as corn pops and scroll through social media as if our fingers are exercising on a treadmile. And at the end, we find ourselves easily discontented and bored with the in betweens, and even with the thrill we previously had.

These days, I’m learning to focus on the little things. Learning to taste my food, embrace the warm hugs and enjoy the climb up a flight of stairs. I’m learning to look people in the eye more and actually listen when they are talking, put my phone away while walking and practice singing instead of sulking (especially when I do the dishes). And as I do that, dare I say – I feel more human and… more alive. LIfe becomes a lot more still, a lot more beuatiful, a lot more fun and a lot more precious.

Kids do this a lot. They can stare at a Ladybug for an hour (if they are not distracted by the phone). No wonder they are always happy.

And no wonder a famous person once said – heaven belongs to those who come as little ones.

Food for thought:

  1. What are some little things that I have allowed to slip by me without realising? How can I be grateful for these little things?
  2. What are some moments I can slow down and focus on being present rather than worrying about the future?
  3. Take time to gaze at something beautiful for a few minutes, rest in the fact that you are fearfully and wonderfully made.
