The project seemed simple enough, use 3 or so colours, and paint a heron flying in the sky.
Only that I kept adding stuff until the painting reached a really ugly stage, like an almost unsavable stage in watercolour.
I was deciding on whether I should just give up on this piece when I thought o well, let me just add some colour and possibly turn the background into a purple sunset.
And it somehow worked. It was not perfect but it was beautiful and you don’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.
I wonder how many times in life have I felt this way, if only I didn’t do this, if only I didn’t add that colour or say that word or forget that date. If only i didn’t take that job. If only that didn’t happen to me. If only.
And sometimes, if these ‘if only’s’ pile up enough, we reach that ugly stage in life where we feel like giving up.
But don’t.
If I had given up on the artwork, there would not be this piece that defies common sense a little but is beautiful, and there won’t be this little story to tell and lesson to learn.
We all have regrets, things we wish we had or had not taken place. Some in our control some not. But don’t let them get to us. Turn them over to the One who created you and knows you through and through.
Unclench your fist and forgive yourself and others. And allow God’s waves of grace come in to add colours to all those blots that never made sense in your life at first.
That’s why He came. That’s why the Jesus of the Bible came. And when we find forgiveness in Him, He rewrites our stories.
