Chasing Beauty

Some people like chasing sunsets, others maybe cars? I like chasing butterflies.

Oh to have a thousand butterflies fly pass me creating a beautiful symphony of colours.

We all seek beauty, we long to find glimpses of the perfect sunset or spy on a beautiful insect. But where is beauty truly to be found.

One of my favourite verses in the bible is in Psalm 27:4 – ‘ One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to enquire in His temple.’

Its a nice verse to read in isolation, but when one reads it in the context of the whole Psalm, David is talking about armies encamping against him, war arising and evildoers assailing him. Well, a bit of an inappropriate time to seek beauty? A rather dark time I would say.

But maybe that’s the key, maybe it is in these times, or moments of trouble, do we truly realise, or are forced to run into the arms of the one who can truly protect us and find Him, all we ever needed or wanted. We find Him beautiful.

Verse 8 goes on to say ‘ You have said, ‘Seek my face,” My heart says to you, ‘ Your face, Lord, do I seek.’

I guess it is in the dark night of the soul, that I find that all I need is Him, that He is truly beautiful. Maybe it is in these times I stop looking at His hands, what He can do for me, and start beholding Him, seeking His face, and finding Him all I need.

He is my light and my salvation and the stronghold of my life. And that in seeking His face, His beautiful face, I am satisfied. He is all I need. He is My King. He is My God. He is beautiful.

And upon encountering His marvellous light, upon finding the grace to abide in Him, He leads us on a level path, and I will surely look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! (v12,13)

Christ, You are the light of my life, help me to find in You a beauty that never fades, that satisfies me and brings life to me in the darkest moments of my life.
