Finding stillness in the Midst of a Storm

There I was looking at the little boat by the shore in a picture. A picture of serenity and stillness. if being still meant this it sure would be easy.

But then it occurred to me. This is not where the boat belongs. Yes the boat is placed by the shore when not in use, but where it finds it purpose and destiny is when it is out there on the sea, weathering the winds and the waves.

And then I reflected on my life. Just the night before I had heard some news from my work that made me feel discouraged and doubtful about where I was headed. I felt like withdrawing from that work I was doing. I wanted to just be safe, do the normal ‘un-risky’ stuff.

Basically, I wanted to be that little boat by that shore.

But then I realised that life wouldn’t be life without the risk and adventure of being out in the open sea. Yes, it would be safer for me by the shore, but there is not where my purpose is met.

While it is easy to withdraw and choose the safe path in life, where stillness is easy, it is not what we were made for. Instead, we are called to be the boat at sea, weathering the waves and reaching the intended destination. And we can find stillness amidst the uncertainty of the storm, when we know that the master of the boat is onboard and in control.

So at that moment, I said a prayer and found my comfort in my Creator.

I was out in sea, billowed by the waves of uncertainty, but I was not alone. My God was with me, and He will make sure I reach the other side safely.

Yes, venturing out in life, building those relationships, giving love, sowing and helping is risky business. Sometimes its like I am a boat amidst the storms and the waves, but there is where my purpose and destiny lies. And I can choose to be still when I know my Creator is holding my life in the palm of His hands. After all His hands were pierced for me.

Venture out to sea, get wet, get sweaty. The storms will come, as well as the winds of uncertainty. But know that the master is in the boat, and to that other side you will reach, through the ranging seas.
