I loved this story the moment I heard it .
A young boy went to a sweet shop with all kinds of sweets and chocolates.
As it was Chinese New Year (slight adaptation here), the shop owner told the young boy:`it’s my treat today, you can take home as much sweets as your hands can grab from the container, would you like to have a go young boy?’
The young boy was so excited. He flexed his hand a little and was all ready to dig in to grab as much sweets as possible.. ‘Oh boy! Oh boy! As much sweets as I can hold!’, he thought to himself .
Then he stopped all of a sudden. As if he had a light bulb moment.
He turned to the shopkeeper and said,
‘ Sir, thank you for your generosity. But I have a request. Could you grab the sweets for me instead? Your hands are bigger than mine.’
So many of us are like that little boy. We see the possibilities all around us and try to grab so much at life. A career by 23, a car by 25, a house by 27, a family with two kids by 40…… and the list goes on. But are we trying to grab things beyond us with our own little hands?
I love how the little boy was wise and asked the owner of the sweet shop to grab the sweets instead. In this world, there is a Creator who knows us better, who knows what we were made for. Maybe it’s time to pause and allow the owner of this Universe to take control. After all, His hands are bigger than ours.
